The Purpose of Pi Sigma Alpha is to stimulate scholarship and intelligent interest in political science. The society functions at the national level, sponsoring programs and events of value to the profession and teaching of political science. The goal of the Theta Phi chapter at UNLV is to provide a framework for enriching the exposure of its members and the wider university community to the study of government and issues of public concern. The goals of Pi Sigma Alpha are consistent with the aims of the Association of College Honor Societies.

Pi Sigma Alpha (Theta Phi) would like to welcome our new faculty advisor, Professor Tiffiany Howard!!!

Tiffiany Howard, Ph.D - Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science and Public Policy from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and expert in International Relations, State Failure, Conflict and Security, and Refugee and Immigration Policy

Although we are grateful to have Professor Howard joining our family here at UNLV, we are thankful for the service and leadership Professor Slapin added to our organization and wish him the best of luck in all his future endeavors!!

The Center for Arms Control and Non Proliferation will be in Las Vegas as part of their nation-wide outreach program, which focuses on educating the public and opinion leaders on national security issues, including effective measures to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and U.S. foreign and military policy toward Iran and Iraq.

Speakers:
Colonel Richard L. Klass, USAF (Retired)
-Colonel Richard L. Klass has been speaking about the war in Iraq and overall U.S. foreign policy toward the Middle East for the past several years. He is currently the Executive Director for the Veterans’ Alliance for Security and Democracy (VETPAC) after retiring from a 22-year career in the U.S. Air Force.

Catherine Thomasson, MD
-Catherine Thomasson is a past board president of national Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR), and current Board President of Oregon PSR. She has been a driving force to reach out into the Oregon community on PSR issues of Global Warming, reducing the nuclear threat, and promoting direct diplomacy with Iran (which she visited in 2007).

The event will be about a 20 minute presentation from each speaker and then a Q&A to follow. I hope everyone can attend!!

CALL FOR PAPERS!

Governance, UNLV Political Science’s only undergraduate research publication is accepting submissions on any topic within political science. Previously written and submitted term papers are encouraged for submission. Any submission should have a cover page with title; authors name and L number only and be submitted through e-mail to krametb2@unlv.nevada.edu with the subject line saying “PSA Governance Submission” by October 1, 2008 @ 5:00pm.
